BICYCLE DOWN WAIMEA CANYON

Ride from the rim of the famed Waimea Canyon (elevation 3600 feet) down 12 miles of smooth winding blacktop all the way to the shore of the blue Pacific. Don't worry-you don't have to pedal to the top, you'll ride with your fellow bikers in a comfortable van that tows a trailer containing the bikes.

The key word for this tour is "down" which means there's more braking than pedaling involved, so you don't have to be Lance Armstrong to try this activity. A guide on a bike in front leads the way and the van blocks traffic from the rear. Comfortable helmets and state of the art safety equipment and procedures are used. Great cruiser bikes with WIDE, COMFY SADDLES, Hi-rise handlebars, aluminum frames and Shimano Nexus Inter 7 hubs with POWER BRAKES. We're talking about some real Barcaloungers on wheels here.

You'll stop along the way at beautiful points of interest for dialog and narrative on diverse topics ranging from history , culture and legends to personal island experience with special emphasis placed on natural history and identification of native plants, birds and trees. And while you're here, quiz your guides about the best Kauai hiking trails located in Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon State Park

Since you'll most likely wake up fairly early when you first arrive—due to the time change—this is a great tour to do early in your vacation. You can literally coast at the crack of dawn. Enjoy fresh-brewed Kauai Coffee and blueberry muffins hot out of the oven before beginning your downhill descent. The early birds will be blessed with soft low angled light that draws out the colors of the canyon.

If you're not into the early bird thing, try a late afternoon tour. Enjoy the same low angled light accentuating the canyon's rugged terrain, only from the west rather than the east. Shadows and colors jump out with soft, brilliant greens, reds and purple highlights. In addition, the forbidden Island of Niihau is visible off to the west. Cold soft drinks, spring water and Kauai Cookies are served.
