FORBIDDEN ISLAND OF NIIHAU

This private island is owned by the Robinson family, one of Kauai's largest land owners. The family purchased the island from the King in the late 1800's for $10,000. The permanent population of Niihau consists of less than 200 native Hawaiians and the island is the only place in the Hawaiian Islands where the Hawaiian language is spoken exclusively.

Although visitors are prohibited unless they are native Hawaiian, a few boat companies have snorkel and scuba diving tours to the nearby waters, which are famous for their clarity and, hence, visibility (which some days reaches 200 feet). That's why the snorkeling and scuba diving is so popular over here. A trip to Niihau is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There are not many people who can say they've been to Niihau much less snorkeled her waters. This is a long day–approximately eight hours in a power catamaran–and first includes a tour up Kauai's Na Pali Coast before crossing the channel to the forbidden island of Niihau.
